Question
What is code P0087?
P0087 code means “Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low,” meaning the powertrain control module (PCM) has sensed a dip in fuel rail/system pressure.
The code also indicates that your car’s engine isn’t getting sufficient fuel to operate properly. The powertrain control module (PCM) registers this code when the pressure in the fuel system or fuel rail goes below the minimum levels required to give your car’s engine sufficient fuel to operate properly. The check engine light will turn on because of lower fuel pressure, thereby activating a failsafe mode to avoid damage to the car till you repair it.
What are the symptoms of a P0087 code?
These are some typical symptoms you can observe when PCM logs this error code:
- Severe drop in fuel economy
- Engine stalling
- The check engine light illuminates
- Poor engine performance
- Engine misfiring
- Lack of throttle response
- Poor acceleration
- The car may stop running
What causes a P0087 code?
These are some common reasons for the code to activate in your car:
- A dirty or defective fuel pump or fuel pump control module
- Clogged fuel filter
- Electrical issue with the low-pressure fuel pump
- Wiring issues
- Faulty powertrain control module (PCM)
- The Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor is having an electrical issue
- A defective or worn-out high-pressure pump
- Electrical issue with the High-Pressure Pump Solenoid
- Worn-out camshaft lobe or camshaft timing on the pump drive

How to fix the P0087 code
You must first confirm the error code with the help of an OBD-II scanner and reset it. Then, test drive the car to check whether the code has been cleared or not. If the code appears again, you must do some of these fixes:
- If the fuel pump is defective, opt for replacement. Make sure that the new pump meets the car manufacturer’s specifications.
- To remove any dirt or debris creating a blockage in the fuel flow, remove the dirt or debris from the fuel filter. Having a clean filter ensures correct fuel pressure and avoids problems in the future.
- If there’s any leak or damage to the fuel lines, repair or replace them. Make sure that the fuel lines are correctly connected to avoid fuel leakage.
- If the fuel pressure sensor is faulty, replace it.
How to avoid code P0087
The error code can adversely impact the car’s drivability. So, it is best that you follow these steps to avoid encountering the code:
- Routine servicing of your car
- Change the oil filter, oil, and air filter on time.
- Visually examine if there are any issues with the wiring and connectors.
- As the main reason for the code to activate is a blocked fuel filter, always ensure that the component is maintained well and neatly.
Can I drive with a P0087 code?
No, we don’t recommend it. The code implies that your car isn’t getting enough fuel to run correctly. If you don’t resolve the issue on time, it will result in decreased fuel economy, poor engine performance, and stalling. Finally, it will severely damage the engine.
