Can you scrap a car without a title in NC?

It is possible to scrap a car without a title in NC if the car is 12 years or older.

If the specific requirements are met, a secondary metals recycler or salvage yard can purchase a car for scrap without a title in North Carolina. However, it is mandatory that the scrapper ensure the following before signing up for the deal.  

• Record the transaction details, including the VIN, vehicle description, seller’s ID, and amount paid. 
• Obtain a signed statement from the seller certifying they have the legal right to sell the vehicle, that it’s at least 12 years old, and that it carries no liens or security interests. 
• Verify through the NC DMV that the vehicle has not been reported stolen before completing the sale. 
• Report the transaction to the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) within 72 hours. 
• Keep all records for a minimum of two years. 

If the DMV confirms the vehicle is stolen, you cannot proceed with the sale, and law enforcement must be notified. If the seller falsifies any statements or knowingly violates these rules, they will face a Class I felony and a minimum $1,000 fine.
