Question

How do I register my car in Connecticut

To drive your car in Connecticut, you need to register at the nearest DMV. And to initiate the registration process, one must make an appointment and visit the DMV in person. Here's a step–by–step process on what to do next:

Step 1: Examine Compliance: Before getting your car registered, you should clear any outstanding parking tickets and tax payments. You could also be denied registration if you haven’t cleared any emission test or if you do not have insurance.

Step 2: Arrange the Required Documents: Make sure to carry the following documents when you visit the DMV for registration;

  • Vehicle registration certificate
  • Out-of-state certificate of title
  • VIN verification report
  • Proof of auto insurance policy
  • Valid identity proof, such as a valid ID card, Canadian license, or US military card.
  • Application form for registration (Form H-13 B)
  • Registration fee

Step 3: Carry out the Emissions Test: An emissions test is mandatory in the state for all new and out-of-state vehicles. Once you pass the test, you will get an inspection report, which you must submit to the DMV.

Step 4: Verify your VIN: When you get the emission test done, they will also verify your vehicle’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to ensure that the vehicle is legitimate, not stolen, and matches its paperwork.

Step 5: DMV Office Visit: To initiate the registration process, the CT DMV asks you to schedule an appointment with the nearest DMV office.

Step 6: Make the Payment: Pay the required amount to complete your registration. The costs, however, depend on the vehicle type and weight. It will cost $120 to register a passenger vehicle for 3 years. However, the price is slashed to $57 for 3 years if it is an electric car. Meanwhile, one must pay $47 per year if it is a commercial vehicle.

Step 7: Receive the Title: You will receive the title within 30 days of completing the registration.
