Question

How to fix low oil pressure?

Low oil pressure can severely impact the performance of your vehicle and should be promptly addressed. Though a major concern, it's relatively easier to fix, given you know what’s causing behind the problem. So, here are the common causes and easy fixes for low oil pressure:

Causes  Fixes
Low oil level  Examine the oil level, and if it’s lower than the minimum oil required, fill it up. Also, look for oil drippings on the ground to detect leaks and keep track of how many miles you can go before refueling.
Oil pump failure  If the issue with the oil pump is minimal, repair it. If not, replace it.
Damaged oil filter  You can’t effectively “fix” a damaged oil filter; you must replace it with a new one. So, the best way to fix it is to prevent the buildup of dirt and contaminants.
Too high or too low viscosity of oil  Replace the engine oil and filter with the manufacturer’s recommended grade. For a temporary fix, a viscosity index improver can be added to the oil to help maintain its viscosity.
Issues with the engine  To address this, proper diagnosis is important. Seek professional help to locate what the problem is.
