How to pass a smog check?

An efficient emission system of your vehicle will help you pass a smog test.

Your car needs to undergo a smog check to ensure that it is not emitting harmful pollutants to the environment. In addition, it is a legal requirement, too.  

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has mandated strict guidelines for automobile emissions to limit exposure to dangerous chemicals. This is tested during a smog check. However, vintage vehicles and those built before 1975, electric cars, and some diesel automobiles are exempt from the test.   

A smog check is needed when you renew your vehicle registration, when there is a change of ownership, and in the state of California; it must be done for registering for the first time there.  

How to pass a smog check?

There are no shortcuts to passing a smog check. However, there are a few steps you can take before going for a smog check.  

• Make sure the check engine light is off. 
• Wait at least two weeks after replacing your battery before taking your vehicle for the test.
• Restore modified software to the manufacturer’s original settings.  
• An oil change before the smog check will result in a cleaner engine.  
• Heat the catalytic converter before the test by driving for 20 minutes. 
• Fill your tires to ensure proper tire pressure. 

How long does a smog test take?  

A smog test is not a very cumbersome process, and it would take only about 10 to 20 minutes to get it done. You’ll get a smog certificate or vehicle inspection report. If your car clears the test, the information will be sent to the DMV or the concerned authorities, and you can register your car.  

You can also get your vehicle sticker right there at the smog checking center. However, this might cost you a small “convenience fee” for the privilege you’re getting.   

In addition, to avoid lengthy queues for a smog test, visit a smog check center outside peak times. Try to avoid weekends whenever possible. Going there on a weekday afternoon could be a safer option for a quick exit.
