Question
How to renew a driver’s license in Idaho
A driver’s license can be renewed in Idaho in three ways: in person, by mail, or online. Here’s what you need to do:
To renew it in person
- Schedule an appointment with a nearby DMV.
- Produce documents that prove your identity, birthdate, SSN, and residency.
- Prepare to attend the driving and written tests if your license remains expired for more than 25 months.
- Pass the vision examination with or without corrective lenses. You have to wear corrective lenses when driving if required.
- Pay the renewal fees based on your age and any applicable tests.
- Get a new photograph taken.
- Then you will get a temporary paper license. You will receive the new license in around 12-14 days.
To renew it online
- Visit the Idaho Transportation Department’s (ITD) website.
- Enter the required information from your current driver’s license.
- Also, provide any other personal details.
- Pay the renewal fee (Fees may vary depending on the age and license validity period).
- Once the required information is provided, you’ll get confirmation that your license renewal has been processed.
- Since the renewal is made online, you will not receive a temporary paper license. You will receive your new license in 12-14 days via mail.
To renew it by mail
- Apply for a 4-year or an 8-year license when you receive the renewal application notice in the mail.
- Fill out the application that’s included in the notice.
- Send the filled application, a check for the $30 renewal fee, and a $1 administration fee to the address specified in the renewal notice.
- In around 14 days, you will receive a new license via mail with your current photo and signature.
