What does the P0446 code on a Chevy mean? 

If your Chevy registers the P0446 code, then it's highly likely that the vent control circuit of the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) of your car is affected. While this DTC isn't exclusive to Chevy cars, it is one of the most common DTCs that can plague your Chevy.  

The P0446 mostly occurs when the vent control circuit of the EVAP system is under threat. However, to diagnose the problem further, you need to identify the specific component that is malfunctioning. It could be because of any of the following reasons; 

• Missing, loose, dented, broken, or damaged fuel cap  
• Cracked, broken, or damaged EVAP hoses 
• A damaged or defective vent control valve in the EVAP system. It can also have debris or may not properly operate due to solenoid failure. 
• A damaged filler neck  
• Cracked fuel tank sending unit gasket, which facilitates fuel flow 
• Damage to the canister, which holds the gas fumes, might be why the code is showing up.   
• Open or damaged electrical connections in the EVAP system. 

Now that you’ve identified the exact problem. It can be easily resolved by repairing or replacing that component. Here’s what you need to do; 

• The gas cap usually causes the P0446 error code, so we’ll start there. Replace the broken gas cap with one from the original manufacturer.  
• Get a new vent control valve if it has debris blocking or is stuck. You can easily replace the old vent valve with a new one.   
• To fix a leak in the EVAP system, replace the vent lines or hoses. In most cases, changing the blocked or ruptured hoses will do the trick.  
• Ensure you use the wiring and connectors that suit your car’s make and model to solve the electrical problems.
