What is code P0036?

P0036 code is defined as “HO2S Heater Control Circuit – Bank 1 Sensor 2, meaning the powertrain control module (PCM) has sensed a potential issue with the heater control circuit’s Bank 1 Sensor 2 or the secondary sensor.

Sensor 2, also identified as the downstream sensor, is located right after the catalytic converter. The engine’s side that houses Cylinder 1 is Bank 1. The primary function of Sensor 2 is post-catalyst monitoring and inspecting the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas when it exits the catalytic converter. Every heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) compares the amount of oxygen in the exhaust system and the surrounding air.

The heater circuit draws its power from the PCM, rapidly bringing the oxygen sensor to the operating temperature. The PCM controls the oxygen sensor circuit depending on the engine load readings and engine coolant temperature until it reaches the ideal temperature of 570°F. If the heated oxygen sensor quickly reaches the desired temperature, it will start sending the correct signals. If the PCM finds that the oxygen sensor isn’t sending the correct signal or no signal at all, it will log the P0036 engine code.
