Question

Why does my car jerk when I brake?

Have you ever felt your car shake when you brake? This is not normal. Your brakes should help you stop safely and smoothly.

A jerking feeling in your car can come from different issues with the brake parts. These include:

1. Worn-out brake pads

Brake pads wear out over time because they are used constantly. You may feel the vehicle jump or jerk when the brake pads cannot stop the wheels. To prevent this, check the brakes regularly for wear and tear and fix them when needed.

2. Low brake fluid levels

Brake fluid is important for keeping your car running well. It helps the pistons and pumps move smoothly. If your car has low brake fluid, it can cause jerking when you brake. This happens because the brake system isn’t working properly. To avoid this issue, check the brake fluid level regularly and look for leaks. Sometimes, the brake fluid reservoirs or hoses may need repair or replacement to fix the problem.

3. Debris accumulation

You can’t avoid dirt and mud on the road, no matter how careful you are while driving. If you often drive on country roads or rough surfaces, your car can easily collect this dirt. It can get stuck inside the brakes and rotors, which may cause jerking when you try to brake.

4. Damaged ABS

The anti-lock brake system, or ABS, is an important part of a car that prevents the brakes from locking up during hard braking. Over time, ABS wiring can have problems, which can affect how it works and may cause the car to jerk when you brake. You can easily spot issues with the ABS because a warning light will show up on your dashboard. If you see this light, take your car to a qualified mechanic right away.

5. Air trapped in the brake line

Working brake lines are vital for your car’s function. If there is a leak, air can get trapped in these lines, causing a jerking feeling when you brake.
