In which states do I need an international driving permit? 

You need an international driving permit in the United States for 14 states. In other words, you don't need an IDP in most states unless specified otherwise.

In California and Colorado, you will need an IDP if you are there for more than ninety days. Similarly, you need an international driving permit in states like Indiana, New Jersey, Michigan, South Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin if the license is not in English.
