Question
Can I get a Texas 30-day temporary tag online?
To drive an unregistered car in Texas, you need to get a 30-day temporary license tag until you complete the county registration process. The Texas DMV issues one-trip permits, 30-day, 72-hour, and 144-hour permits. You may purchase a 72-Hour Permit or a144-Hour Permit online. However, you cannot get a 30-day paper temporary tag online in Texas.
Only private buses, trailers, and semitrailers with a gross weight of no more than 10,000 pounds and light commercial cars with a gross weight of no more than 10,000 pounds can get a 30-day temporary permit. If the commercial truck is unladen, it can get this permit even if its gross weight is more than 10,000 pounds.
You may submit the application and purchase a 30-Day Texas temporary permit at your local county tax assessor-collector office or at your nearest TxDMV Regional Service Center.
In other words, you can get only certain tags online, and to obtain the rest, you must go in person. However, if you are driving out of state with a temporary tag, ensure the permit is valid in that state. To get the 30-day temporary tag, you will need a valid USDOT number and proof of a passing inspection.
