Question

Can you get car insurance with a suspended license?

Yes, you can get car insurance with a suspended license, but the purchase will be more complex than a regular purchase.

A suspended license is a major factor for insurers to reject your insurance application. Suspended licenses indicate that you are legally not allowed to drive a car. The reason for suspension can vary. Some of the reasons, like repeated speeding and at-fault accidents, can put you in a high-risk category. Hence, getting insurance with a suspended license is difficult. Unlike the regular ones, insurance for high-risk drivers is not provided by all auto insurers.

How do you get insurance with a suspended license?

Here are some of the steps to get insurance after a license suspension:

  • Contact Your Current Insurer First: The current insurer might help you continue the insurance, mostly by letting you add another driver, with a valid license, as your primary driver.
  • Shop for High-Risk or Non-Standard Insurance: As the license is suspended, you are considered a high-risk insurer. Therefore, check with the insurers who provide such insurance. Eg: Bristol West, General, Dairyland, Direct Auto, etc.
  • Consider an SR-22 or FR-44 Filing If Required: The insurers are supposed to file the forms with the DMV that let you carry insurance after a suspended license.
  • Add a Licensed Primary Driver: As your license is suspended, the insurers let you add another one with a valid license as the primary driver, a family member.
  • Check for Restricted or Hardship Licenses: These are licenses that are valid only in a limited region. You can use it to drive to and from limited destinations such as work or school.
  • Compare Multiple Quotes: Compare the insurers who have SR-22 filing and high-risk insurance coverage. Look for the insurers available in your state. For high-risk insurance, the rates are higher, and options are limited when compared to the regular ones. Hence, it is best to compare the quotes from the available options to lower the cost as much as you can.
