How much is car sales tax in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma charges a tax rate of 4.5% on all car purchases. You’ll have to pay a sales tax rate of 1.25% and a vehicle excise tax of 3.25%.

To register your car, you must first pay the car sales tax in Oklahoma. In addition to this, you must also pay the excise tax when buying a new car.

The state taxes these charges differently for new and secondhand cars. 

  • Buying a new car – 4.5% off the final buying price.  
  • Buying a used car – A fixed rate of $20 gets taxed for the initial $1,500 of the used-car price. The combined 4.5% tax will apply only to the remaining price.
