From 2024, the Inflation Reduction Act allowed certain newly bought all-electric, plug-in hybrid, and fuel-cell electric vehicles to get a federal income tax credit of up to $7,500. Used EVs purchased in 2023 or later could qualify for a tax credit of up to $4,000. However, under President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” the Clean Vehicle Credit for EVs will expire after September 30, 2025.
How to qualify for the EV tax credit?
The EVs must be assembled in North America to qualify for the full tax credit. The battery components and minerals must also come from North America. Other factors include,
Eligibility price caps
- Vans, SUVs, and pickup trucks: $80,000 (or less).
- Sedans and passenger cars: $55,000 (or less).
- Used: $25,000 (or less).
Additionally, there’s the modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) to consider in order to qualify.
- Head of household: $225,000
- Married couples filing jointly: $300,000
- All other filers (single and married): $150,000.
For a used EV,
- Head of household: $112,500.
- Married couples filing jointly: $150,000.
- All other filers (single and married): $75,000.
Once you confirm with the seller that the car you have selected is eligible for the credit, decide when to take it (either immediately or when you file your tax return for the year).
It’s also important to get a time-of-sale report from the seller at the time of purchase. The final step is to file Form 8936, Clean Vehicle Credits, with your tax return.
