How to clean a catalytic converter 

Step 1: Look out for the symptoms 

If you see one or more of these symptoms, chances are your catalytic converter is suffering. Seek professional help to diagnose the problem if you encounter any of these issues in your car: 

• The stench of a rotten egg  
• Starts that are difficult to manage  
• Sluggish acceleration  
• Power loss and poor fuel efficiency 
• Or the DTC P0420 

Step 2: Find the cause 

Finding the root of the problem is as important as fixing the issue. Any of the following issues could be causing your catalytic converter to work inefficiently: 

• Improper Fuel-To-Air Ratio causing carbon build-up 
• Bad Oxygen/Lambda Detection 
• Damaged internal or external components could also be the culprit. 

Step 3: Cleaning the catalytic converter 

If the cause is anything other than internal or external physical damage, you can save the converter with a proper clean up. You can either clean it with dish soap or use a catalytic converter cleaner.  

Cleaning with dish soap involves; 

• Removing the vehicle’s catalytic converter with the proper tools.  
• Add dish soap and water to a large bucket.  
• Soak the dismantled catalytic converter in the bucket overnight.  
• Make sure that the converter’s honeycomb is free of debris.   
• Once it’s free of debris and dirt, replace the catalytic converter and reassemble the exhaust system. 

You can also use a cleaner to clean the buildup. However, make sure that the car’s fuel tank is only 1/4 full. Next, 

• Add cleaner to clean the fuel tank (The amount required will vary according to the type of cleaner used). 
• Drive for 10 to 15 miles at a reasonable speed. The cleaner will mix with your fuel and break down any buildup. 
• Continue driving as normal after you’ve refilled your gas tank.
