Question

How to register my car in Florida?

The method of getting a car registered in Florida is pretty simple. Make sure you have the right forms, and then go to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) to complete the registration. Here's a step-by-step guide to Florida car registration.

  • Step 1:

Check your License – You cannot register your car in Florida unless you have a valid and unexpired Florida driver’s license. If you’ve just moved to Florida from another state, have your old license transferred over.

  • Step 2:

Bring/apply for your car’s title – If you already have a title, provide it at the time of registration. If not, you can apply for the title and registration together. Fill out the application for the title, which will be available at the DHSMV.

  • Step 3:

Pay the initial registration fee – If the owner does not have a license plate or record of a license plate registered in their name for a vehicle they previously owned (in Florida) to transfer to a newly acquired vehicle, they should pay an initial registration fee of $225.

  • Step 4:

Visit a local service centerRemember, unlike registration renewals, initial registration can’t be taken care of online. It must happen in person at a local service center.

  • Step 5:

Produce the documents – When you visit the center for registration, you should provide a few documents, like a government-issued photo ID, proof of a current and valid Florida car insurance policy, and a completed Application for Certificate of Title With/Without Registration (HSMV form 82040).

  • Step 6:

Conduct a VIN examination and odometer reading The VIN of your car must be analyzed to check the vehicle’s identity, ensure its legal status, and prevent fraud. You can get the examination done by any police officers, military officers, car dealers, or notary public. Wherever you get it done, bring an inspection form from the Florida DHSMV.

Upon completing your Florida car registration, you’ll receive a license plate for the back of your vehicle and a registration sticker with a validation label in the upper right-hand corner. You’ll also receive a registration certificate, which you should always keep with you.
