You can replace your driver’s license in MA by visiting the RMV in person, online, or over the phone.  

You’ll need a whole set of documents and need to fill out a couple of forms to replace your driver’s license in MA. The state has some stringent rules for the replacement and renewal of the license. Moreover, the primary step before requesting a replacement is to report the loss or theft to the authority through the proper channel.  

How do I replace MA’s lost driver’s license?

You can replace your lost driver’s license in MA either online, in person, or by phone. The details you will require immediately are:  

  • Driver’s license or permit number  
  • Date of birth  
  • Social Security Number  
  • Email address.   

Consequently, if it is time for you to renew your MA driver’s license after you lose it, you should renew it instead of replacing it. However, you must apply in person if you need to apply for a permit.   

Replace a lost Massachusetts driver’s license online

  • Log in to Massachusetts’s RMV website.   
  • Enter your Date of Birth, license, permit, or ID number, date of birth, and the last 4 digits of your SSN.   
  • Pay a fee of $25.   

Following the payment, you’ll receive a receipt email. Within 7–10 days, the MA RMV will send your replacement driver’s license to your registered mailing address.

  • Visit your nearest local RMV.   
  • Fill in Form LIC100 (Driver’s license, learner’s permit, or ID card application form).   
  • Submit the documents supporting your residency and social security number. 
  • Pay the fee of $25.   

The documents that support your Massachusetts residency, such as  

  • Any document issued by the RMV  
  • Bank statement or credit card statement dated within 60 days  
  • First-class mail  
  • Federal, state, or municipal documents.   

Additionally, submit your Social Security card or the W-2 form as proof of your Social Security number.   

Replace a lost Massachusetts driver’s license by phone.

To replace the lost driver’s license by phone, first you need to find the appropriate phone number, which includes (857) 368-8000 or 1-800-858-3926 for area codes 339, 617, 781, and 857, or from outside the state. However, you can contact (877) 768-8833 for people with hearing difficulty from other MA area codes.    

Secondly, in addition to the fee of $25, you must be ready with all the required details.    

For military personnel outside MA

If you are an active military member, you or your dependents can request a license replacement by mail.   

  • State if your license was lost or stolen. 
  • Attach a photocopy of your military identification. 
  • Send the mail to the address mentioned below.
