How wide is a parking space?

A parking space typically varies from 7.5 to 9 feet wide, and it varies based on the type of parking space. 

Parking lots are segregated based on criteria such as the parking angle, vehicle type, and parking area.  

Based on vehicle size, parking lots are categorized as follows:  

• Standard Perpendicular: This parking space is for all cars, including sedans and hatchbacks that are not in the category of large vehicles. The minimum requirement for a standard perpendicular parking lot is 9 feet in width and 18 feet in length.  
• Standard Parallel: A standard parallel must be at least 10 feet wide and 24 feet long.  
• Compact: These are the parking lots mainly for cars of compact size and require less space to park. Hence, you need 8 feet wide and 16 feet long spaces for a compact space.  

How wide is a handicap parking space?  

As per the Americans with Disabilities Act, the parking space for the handicapped must be at least 8 feet wide for cars and 11 feet for vans. It is mandatory that all these accessible spots have an access aisle of 5 feet in width.
