Question

What are the pros and cons of driverless cars?

Are self-driving cars safer than humans and completely free from error? If so, what are its pros and cons? Here’ what we think.

The answer to this question cannot be a simple yes or no. While companies like Tesla, Waymo and Uber are at the forefront of developing ‘self -driving’ or autonomous cars, the prototypes created by them are at best partially autonomous since they require human intervention at some point. Hence, we have not yet developed a fully autonomous car to test whether they can function independently. But it is possible and if developed successfully it has a lot of pros.
It can help reduce accidents caused by driver negligence, it can help the disabled or senior citizens, traffic will be well-regulated, and it can even have environmental benefits. Having said that, these could also have several cons.
Autonomous cars could perform worse on edge cases, that is, highly improbable, unexpected situations and bad weather could ruin their sensors which would make them susceptible to errors. Furthermore, these are just machines. They lack intuition and instinct which can harm their response in certain situations.
