Question

What car insurance coverage do I need?

The car insurance coverage you need depends on factors such as car make & model, driver risk profile, your zip code, etc.

Here are some of the important car insurance coverages you need while driving a car:

Liability coverage

Liability coverage or liability insurance is a mandatory insurance policy required all over the US. All states, except New Hampshire, require you to keep liability auto insurance while keeping a car, whether it is running on public or private roads.

Liability insurance covers the indemnity for bodily injury and property damage to a third party. Usually, you only need to keep the state minimum coverage, which varies as per the respective state laws.

State minimum coverage

The state minimum coverage is the auto insurance mandated by the respective states. This varies among the states. Some only require the standard liability insurance, which includes bodily injury and property damage. All the same, some states require additional coverage, such as personal injury protection, medpay, and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. The limit of each of these coverages is decided by the states. Hence, it is mandatory to keep the respective insurance coverage in each state.

Collision coverage

Collision coverage pays for the damage and repair of your car during a crash or rollover. The cover is not mandatory in all states. Still, it might be required if your car is financed or leased. In such cases, the coverage limits are dictated by the respective financier. Also, it is best to keep sufficient collision coverage based on your car’s repair cost.

Comprehensive coverage

A comprehensive coverage pays for the damages other than collision. You can adjust the coverage limit according to your requirements. However, the car make and model are important factors that decide the limits. Based on the respective car’s part and repair cost, you can raise or lower the coverage limits. Also, if your car is financed or leased, then it is best to maintain the coverage limits as mentioned by the loan or lease agreement.
