What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets the enhanced federal security standards set by the REAL ID Act. This ID, marked by a distinctive star, is designed to be more secure and prevent fraudulent use. You can use a REAL ID to board domestic flights or enter secure federal facilities, like military bases.

Do you need a REAL ID to fly?

Yes, as of May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or a state-issued ID to fly within the country. You can’t go through TSA security checkpoints if you don’t produce a REAL ID or other acceptable identification forms. Every passenger aged 18 and above must have a REAL ID-compliant license or ID while traveling within the country. If your license is not compliant, you may still use your passport or an enhanced driver’s license to fly on a domestic flight.

How to get a REAL ID

You can make your ID or license REAL ID-compliant when you apply for a new license, renew your driver’s license, or renew your state ID card. So, when you get your new license or card, it will have a star marking on the top right portion. The process of getting one or determining what documents you should provide depends on the state in which you live.

What do you need for a REAL ID?

Identify proof: To prove it, you can provide your US passport, birth certificate, or a Permanent Resident Card if you are not a citizen of the USA.
Social Security number proof: You can provide Form W-2, your Social Security card, a paycheck, or a pay stub.
Residency proof: Your state motor vehicles department will ask you for a deed, utility bill, lease agreement, mortgage statement, or bank statement to prove your residency.
