Question

What is code P0507?

Code P0507 denotes “Idle Control System RPM Higher than Expected,” indicating an error in the idle control system.

Engine code P0507 implies that the idle control system has an extremely high RPM, also identified as “high idle.” When you’re idling your car, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) needs to keep a definite RPM range. When the RPM is more than the expected range, the ECU will trigger the P0507 code. The failsafe mode activates when the code gets triggered, and the “check engine light” turns on.

What are common symptoms of P0507?

The most noticeable sign of code P0507 is the illuminated check engine light. The following are the other common signs you can observe.

  • Decrease in fuel economy
  • Trouble controlling your car’s speed
  • Engine RPM is higher than ideal during idling
  • Irregular or unstable idle
  • Engine stalling
  • Hard start

What causes code P0507?

These are some common reasons why the code shows up in your car.

  • Blocked or defective Idle Speed Control (ISC)/Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
  • Engine vacuum leakages
  • Engine mechanical issues
  • Sensor issues
  • Fault with the throttle body or electronic throttle actuator (ETC) motor
  • Circuit problems, like faulty wiring and loose connections
  • Defect with the air intake system
  • Fault with the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system
  • Failed alternator
  • Faulty or dirty throttle body
  • Issues with the EVAP system

How to fix the P0507 code

These are some steps that you can follow to fix the error code.

  • If the valve is defective or dirty, cleaning or changing it can restore correct idle control.
  • Fix any faulty vacuum hoses or connections to remove additional air intake.
  • If the throttle position sensor (TPS) is defective or misaligned, repairing or replacing it can help control idle speed.
  • A dirty throttle body can adversely affect the idle control. You can fix the error code by cleaning it.
  • After doing the required repairs, clear the P0507 engine code using an OBD scan tool and do a test drive to confirm that the idle speed comes back to normal and the engine code doesn’t reappear.

Can I drive with a P0507 code?

Though you can technically drive with this code, we won’t recommend it. Driving with this code for a longer period can cause stalling, a decrease in fuel economy, severe engine wear, and even unintentional acceleration. There can be severe, expensive damage to your car’s engine, transmission, and throttle body if you don’t diagnose and repair the issue on time. So, take your car to a skilled mechanic for repair as soon as you see the check engine light illuminated.
