The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966 made seat belts mandatory in the United States. In 1968, federal standards required all new cars to have seat belts. Starting December 1, 1984, New York became the first state to require everyone in a vehicle to wear seat belts. Other states followed suit. As of now, 41 states and the District of Columbia require all passengers, including those in the back seat, to wear seatbelts.
