SFO Terminal 1

Terminal 1 at SFO is officially Harvey Milk Terminal 1, named after Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person elected to public office in California. Milk served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors before he was assassinated in 1978. A permanent exhibit on his life and legacy lines the terminal’s main hall, greeting travelers as they pass by. Today, Terminal 1 is SFO’s busiest domestic terminal by carrier count, serving several airlines.

Terminal 1 has 27 gates, B1 through B27. Gates B1 to B4 are about a two-minute walk from the security checkpoint, while Gates B19 to B27 at the south end take about ten minutes to reach. If your gate falls past B19, build that walk into your buffer, especially with a tight connection.

The renovation replaced the old baggage system with the first terminal-wide Independent Carrier System at a U.S. airport, improving baggage handling.

Aer Lingus, Alaska & Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Porter, and Sun Country operate at SFO Terminal 1. SFO Terminal 1 has a secure connector into the International Terminal’s Boarding Area A and the customs area, but arriving international passengers connecting to a Terminal 1 flight must clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection procedures and go through TSA screening again before reaching Terminal 1 gates, unless they arrived on a precleared international flight.

The Domestic Parking Garage sits closest to Terminal 1. The mezzanine level connects directly to the AirTrain and has a dedicated security checkpoint, so you can go from parking or another terminal straight to the checkpoint without a long walk through the main ground-level ticketing hall. If you choose offsite parking, you can take the free shuttle to the terminal from the parking lot.
