Why Phoenix Airport has no Terminal 1 or 2

We won’t keep you in suspense any longer! So here goes:

Terminal 1 was razed in 1991, a little after the $248 million Terminal 4 opened. The West Economy parking lot has now been built where Terminal 1 once stood. A portion of its silhouette is still visible from the air. Terminal 1’s final relic, a version of its famous tower, can still be found at Cutter Aviation along the South runway in the General Aviation sector adjacent to the Interstate-10 Maricopa Freeway.

Terminal 2 was built in 1962 for the fledgling jet era and featured a midcentury modern style that was deemed cutting-edge at the time. It was originally scheduled to be operational until the year 2000. However, it soldiered on until 2020, when it could no longer meet the needs of modern aviation travel. Flight 654 from Alaska Airlines was the last to arrive at Terminal 2 on February 4th, 2020. Sky Harbor will soon demolish this terminal (as part of its 20-year expansion plan). After that, the space will be used for bus gates, which allow planes to load and unload passengers without landing at a terminal. Passengers will take buses from another terminal to their planes, then board via steps or a walkway.
