Question

How to change the battery in your car's key fob

A key fob’s battery can become less responsive over time, mostly due to the battery losing its power. However, if you have a screwdriver and new battery handy, you can easily resolve this issue. Here’s how:

Step 1: Find out the type of battery used– Key fobs use 3V button cell batteries – usually the CR2032. Procure a CR2032 or similar button cell battery that suits your car’s key fob (it’s embossed on the side of the fob)

Step 2: Open the key fob at the seam– Most key fobs are made of two halves that join at a seam. You can easily split them apart by using a finger or sharp edge like a screwdriver against the notch.

Step 3: Take out the old battery and replace it with a new one- This is self-explanatory. Just remember to place the new battery in the same orientation (with the positive side facing up)

Step 4: Snap the fob halves back in place and test it- Check whether the lock/unlock and start functions are working properly to ensure you’ve replaced the battery correctly.

Normally, the key fob will work just fine with a battery change without you having to reprogram it. However, if you’ve changed some of the internal wiring and electronics, you may need to reprogram it by pairing it with your vehicle once again.
