Question
What does the P0301 code mean?
P0301 engine code means “Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected,” indicating the powertrain control module (PCM) sensed a misfire in cylinder 1.
The PCM logs this code when cylinder 1 isn’t correctly firing, as there is no adequate fuel in the air/fuel mixture. Then, the cylinder won’t be moving at the right rate. Eventually, this affects the crankshaft, which all the cylinders control in a cycle. If the misfiring is severe, the RPM of the crankshaft may increase or decrease. The varying RPMs will have an adverse impact on your car’s engine performance.
What are the symptoms of the P0301 code?
The most common symptom will be an illuminated check engine light. The following are some of the other symptoms you can observe.
- Decreased fuel economy
- Engine stalling
- Rough idle
- Your car lacks power and acceleration
- The engine hesitates when accelerating
- Odor of unburned fuel from the exhaust
- The engine runs rough
- The car dies when stopped

What is the most common cause of the P0301 code?
The most common P0301 code causes are the ones associated with the cylinder’s ignition system. However, the following are also some of the reasons why this error code can show up in your car.
- Inaccurate ignition timing
- Vacuum leakage
- Fuel pressure is low or weak
- Improperly working EGR system
- Faulty mass air flow sensor
- Defective camshaft or crankshaft sensor
- Faulty throttle position sensor
- Defective fuel injectors
- Broken, dirty, or defective spark plugs
- Head gasket leakage
- Faulty oxygen sensor
- Defective PCM
How to fix the P0301 code
These are some steps the mechanic will follow to fix this error code.
- Replace the spark plugs if they are broken or worn out
- For the right spark delivery, replace the defective ignition coils
- Repair or replace if the fuel injectors are defective
- If there are any problems with compression, like defective piston rings or valves, repair them.
- Replace or repair any broken wiring or connectors connected to the fuel and ignition systems.
- After making the required repair, the mechanic will clear the error code from the PCM and do a test drive to ensure the issue has been resolved.
How long can I drive with a P0301 code?
You shouldn’t drive at all if the check engine light is flashing. We don’t recommend driving the car for longer distances even if the light is steady, as it will lead to a drop in fuel economy, a reduction in power, and damage to the catalytic converter and the engine. It is always best to take your car to a skilled mechanic and get the issue resolved quickly to prevent costly repairs.
Will P0301 clear itself?
Yes, the error code may rarely clear itself if the problem was temporary. Still, it’s doubtful to stay clear if there’s a continuing problem.
