Changing your car’s air filter is no big deal. With a little know-how, you can change your car’s air filter at home. If you’ve never changed it yourself, here’s our ultimate guide on how to change the air filter in a car.

What’s a Car Air Filter?

The air filter in a car prevents the entry of bugs, dust, sand, debris, and other contaminants into the engine. It also plays a vital role in protecting the sensitive parts in the vehicle from dust and debris. Air filters are rectangular or square and made of porous paper-like material.

What Are the Benefits of Replacing Your Car’s Air Filter?

Here are the benefits of replacing your car’s air filter regularly:

Increases fuel efficiency

The car’s air filter plays a crucial role in increasing your car’s fuel efficiency. A clogged and dirty air filter can limit air entry into the engine, which means your engine now needs more fuel to run. Therefore, by having a clean air filter, you can reduce fuel consumption.

Reduces emission

A clogged air filter can reduce the airflow and damage the vehicle’s emission control systems. Your vehicle can emit harmful substances into the atmosphere. To protect the environment, change your car’s air filter regularly.

Increases engine life

A clean air filter will help extend the life of your engine. Air filters can prevent dust particles and other contaminants from entering your engine and causing damage. A simple air filter replacement can save you hundreds of dollars and increase the engine’s longevity.

How Often Should You Change Your Car’s Air Filter?

Refer to the owner’s manual to know how often you should get your air filter changed. It’s advisable to change the air filter every 12,000 to 15,00 miles. If you’re someone who drives a lot or lives in a very dusty area, the numbers can be lower. Make sure changing the air filters is part of your engine maintenance.

How to Change the Air Filter in a Car – A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1

Purchase an air filter that suits your vehicle. You can buy it from the nearest auto parts store. To find out the kind of air filter that matches your automobile, use the vehicles’ user manual.

Step 2

Now open the hood and locate the air filter box. Remove the metal clips to unlock the air filter box.
