How Much Is a New Engine for a Car?

Share

Engine failure is every automobile enthusiast’s nightmare. Your car’s engine powers everything, so when it begins malfunctioning due to wear and tear or a technical breakdown, you should replace it as soon as possible.

Another scenario is when you have had an old car in your family for years and wonder if it’s worth replacing the engine. Sometimes, the problem is minor and can be fixed quickly and affordably. However, there are situations when you might need to replace your engine.

One of the most difficult tasks a mechanic may experience is swapping out an engine. The year, make, and model of the engine are all factors that demand a distinct strategy for replacement. Therefore, when undertaking such a major project, it’s crucial to have a service handbook tailored to your car. While the technique may vary depending on the vehicle, several aspects of an engine swap are quite common.

Signs of engine trouble

  • Decreased performance
  • Grinding
  • Increased exhaust (excessive smoke from the tailpipe)
  • Leaking fluid on the ground underneath the car
  • Weird noises from the engine( knocking)
  • The oil levels are getting low quickly
  • Engine misfire and compression loss

How to determine if your car is worth repairing

  • Check the age and make of the car
  • The total miles it has run
  • The current mileage that it offers
  • The physical condition of the car
  • History of repairs and their total cost

Compare the stats and determine whether the car is worth repairing. Sometimes it’s not about the cost of material things but the value it means to you.

Minor repairs that can be done to increase the car’s performance

  • Change clogged oil filters
  • Check for low fluid levels and refill if necessary

How much does an engine rebuild cost?

The cost to replace or repair an engine may vary depending on the type of engine and the type of repair it requires. However, the average price of engine repairs can range from $3000 to $4500.

The price for new engines starts at approximately $4,000 for a 4-cylinder, $6000 for a V6, and $7,000 for a V8. Prices may increase based on the engine’s complexity and the car’s brand. For example, the cost to install a performance engine in an imported luxury car is higher than the cost to install an economy car’s base engine.

Sometimes a used engine can be sought for a much lesser price, as little as $500 to $750. The main factors affecting these engines’ prices include the vehicle’s age, total miles run, and shipping costs from where the engine is located. Although not included in the pricing, transportation costs must be considered because the retailer will pass those costs forward to you.

Most engine replacement work takes 10 to 12 hours. However, more complex work can sometimes take more than 14 hours. The labor cost for engine replacement can be calculated by multiplying the quoted number of hours by the hourly rate. The rates vary widely depending on the shop; they can range from $90/ hour to as high as $175.

Another potential engine replacement cost is the need for new oil, coolant, freon, and all other fluids that keep the car running smoothly. However, this usually stays under $100.

Cost for different types of engines

Traditional Gasoline Engine

An average traditional gasoline engine will cost between $4,500 and $6,000  to replace with a new engine. Even a used engine may cost you around $3,000 to $4,000. In comparison, a new V8 engine will cost you about $7000.

Hybrid Car Engine

A Hybrid car can have both an electric motor and a gasoline engine. Since they comprise a motor and an engine, it is hard to determine the average cost of hybrid engines. The repair cost of a hybrid engine depends on whether the electric motor or the gasoline engine needs to be replaced.

If the gasoline engine were replaced, it would probably cost between $2,000 and $3,000, assuming the price of a regular-size engine. The cost of replacing the electric motor can range from $6,000 to $9,000.

It would probably cost between $2,000 and $3,000 to replace the gasoline engine part. The cost of replacing the electric motor will be a bit more expensive and can cost between $6,000 and $9,000

Electric Engine

It’s a motor, not an engine; thus, calling it an “electric engine” is a misnomer. Electric motors usually last much longer than gasoline engines, as they have only two major components. Electric motors can rarely fail or must be replaced, and usually outlast the car itself. If the electric engine does fall apart and the car is still under warranty, the warranty will normally cover the cost of the engine repairs.

Do your manufacturer’s warranties cover engine replacement?

Yes and no. There are some scenarios where warranties do cover the cost.

  • If the car is still under bumper-to-bumper warranty, the manufacturer will have to replace it unless you have made extreme misuse of it.
  • Some plans cover engine repairs if the car has an extended warranty.

Other than these scenarios, you’re on your own most of the time.

What are the options when considering an engine replacement?

If it comes down to engine replacement, you have three options: Rebuild, Used replacement, or Remanufactured replacement.

Engine Rebuild

An engine rebuild is a procedure that requires removing the engine, disassembling it, and replacing every component required to make the engine run like new. Your mechanic will then reassemble the engine. The original engine block will be kept, but the parts will be replaced. The cost of this ranges from $2500 to $5000. Luxury cars are more likely to cost more.

Used Engines

The more affordable option would be to use an old engine that is working. Used engines can be found on eBay or at your local workshop. The prices will vary depending on the engine’s age and condition. However, it can be bought for as little as $600.

Remanufactured Engines

All of the engine’s components, including the cylinders, must be machined, and OEM products must be used in their place. They are restored to their original dimensions. Your best option for an engine replacement is likely to be a remanufactured engine. The car will start to perform like brand new. The remanufactured engines often come with a warranty. They can cost anywhere between $2500 and $5000. Like in every case, luxury cars tend to cost significantly more. Remanufactured Engines are the more reliable option.

Keep in mind that these are just engine costs. The labor charges (transportation charges inclusive) are not included.

Your final option is to sell your car if none of the alternatives above are affordable and make financial sense.
