About Newark Airport

Newark Liberty International Airport, known as EWR, opened on October 1, 1928, as Newark Metropolitan Airport. The airport is around 3.8 miles away from downtown Newark, New Jersey. Along with JFK and LaGuardia (LGA), EWR is one of the three major airports that serve the New York metropolitan area.

With an average annual passenger traffic of around 47 million, Newark Airport is also one of the world’s busiest airports. The airport has around 500 daily departures and is one of United Airlines’ main hubs. This Newark Airport map guide covers the terminals, parking, and everything else you need to find your way around.

Newark Airport terminals

Terminal A, Terminal B, and Terminal C are the three main passenger terminals at Newark Liberty International Airport. The terminals are not within walking distance of each other, but the free AirTrain connects all of them along with the parking and rental car facilities. Our Newark Airport Terminals guide covers each one in detail.

Terminal A

Terminal A reopened in 2023 after a complete rebuild and mostly handles domestic and Canadian flights. It has a single centralized security checkpoint, so all the amenities and gates in the terminal are connected once you clear security.

Terminal B

Terminal B is EWR’s main international gateway and features three concourses. Every concourse has a separate checkpoint, and the concourses aren’t connected airside. If you exit a concourse, you must clear security again to enter another concourse.

Terminal C

Terminal C is exclusively for United Airlines and is divided into three concourses: C1, C2, and C3. Both of its security checkpoints serve all 68 gates in the terminal, so there is no need to re-clear security to move between the concourses.

Airlines at Newark Airport

About 38 airlines operate from Newark Airport. With Newark Airport Terminal C as its hub, United operates the most flights from this airport. JetBlue, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines are the other carriers with the most flight operations after United.

To avoid getting stuck at EWR due to unnecessary flight delays, we suggest you check the live EWR flight status before heading to the airport.

Driving to Newark Airport

If you’re driving to EWR, the New Jersey Turnpike, I-78, and Route 21 provide direct access to the airport. Getting to the airport is actually easy regardless of the direction you’re coming from. However, we recommend you add extra time if you are driving on weekdays from Manhattan or northern New Jersey during morning and evening peak hours. Be aware that there can be sudden traffic congestion around the Newark/Elizabeth interchange during adverse weather conditions or Port Newark shipping delays.

If you are driving to EWR to pick up or drop off a passenger, it is best to use the free Cell Phone Lot near the P4 Daily Parking Garage. For rental car services, the Rental Car Center is a few minutes’ walk from the Terminal A AirTrain station. However, most companies operate a shuttle straight to their counters.

Getting to and from Newark Airport by public transit

If you are using public transit, the NJ Transit Route 62 bus connects the airport and Newark Penn Station. The bus operates on the route throughout the day. The AirTrain also connects all airport terminals and parking/rental car facilities to the Newark Liberty Airport Rail Station, where NJ Transit trains and Amtrak trains both stop.

Onsite and offsite parking at Newark Airport

Terminal A Short-Term Parking and Terminals B & C Short-Term Parking are the garages that offer the closest parking to all the terminals. The P4 Daily Parking Garage is a little farther away from the terminals. Still, the availability of an AirTrain station inside this garage makes the transit easier. The P6 Economy Parking Lot is the farthest parking lot from all the terminals. You need to board a 24/7, free shuttle bus to reach your respective terminal. The transit time can vary depending on the terminal you’re flying from.

If you are looking for the cheapest Newark Airport parking rates, offsite lots nearby are your safest option. Most lots also offer a free round-trip shuttle service so that you don’t need to be stressed about reaching the airport on time.

Family and accessibility facilities at Newark Airport

All airport terminals feature nursing suites and Mamava lactation pods, as well as outdoor and indoor pet relief areas. Terminal C has a Chapel/Meditation Room between Gates C70-C99 and C101-C115. In Newark Airport Terminal A, there is an exclusive Meditation Room and a Sensory Room after the security area.

Elevators, accessible facilities, and wheelchair assistance are available at the airport. You must contact your airline in advance or inquire at any check-in desk to arrange any assistance. Also, the airport joins the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard program across all terminals, letting travelers with non-visible/hidden disabilities subtly signal staff if they need additional time or assistance.

Security at Newark Airport

The airport operates six TSA security checkpoints across its three terminals. Terminal A has a centralized checkpoint, Newark Airport Terminal B has exclusive security checkpoints for each concourse, and Terminal C has one security checkpoint on the Main level and one on the Lower level. TSA PreCheck is available at all security checkpoints across all the terminals.

Terminal Number of checkpoints Layout & post security connectivity
A 1 Serves all the gates in the terminal. All amenities and gates are connected after security.
B 3 Every concourse has a separate checkpoint. Concourses aren’t connected airside. If you exit a concourse, you must clear security again to enter another concourse.
C 2 Both checkpoints serve all 68 gates in the terminal.

Dedicated CLEAR lanes are available at all terminals. Whether you are flying out during peak hours or not, we recommend that you check the live EWR TSA wait times in advance.

Baggage claim at Newark Airport

You can locate the baggage claim areas at EWR on Level 1 (Arrivals level) across all three terminals. As EWR isn’t connected airside after security between terminals, your baggage claim area will depend directly on your arriving airline and flight origin.

Terminal Location
A Level 1 (Arrivals)
B Level 1 (Domestic)
Level 2 (International)
C Level 1 (Arrivals)
