About JFK Terminal 7

JFK Terminal 7 remains fully active today, operating a normal flight schedule with no active airline relocations. The terminal was built in 1970 for British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), the British state carrier that later became British Airways. When most foreign carriers shared a common terminal, BOAC was the first foreign carrier to build and run its own terminal at any US airport.

However, the Terminal 7 setup can change as the airport modernizes. Construction of a new Terminal 6 is underway close to Terminal 7. The airlines at Terminal 7 will shift to Terminal 6 once the construction work is complete. Terminal 7 will then be demolished to make way for the second phase of Terminal 6.

Since Terminal 7 is smaller than most other terminals, you can often enjoy shorter wait times and quick walks to the departure gates. The terminal also features many passenger amenities, including dining, duty-free shopping, and premium lounges. Learn all the details about JFK Terminal 7 via our guide!

JFK Terminal 7 map

JFK Terminal 7

Terminal 7 is currently the airport’s smallest active terminal. The terminal features 12 departure gates, numbered 1 through 12, sprawling across a multi-level structure. The ground level features an arrivals and baggage claim area. Meanwhile, the central level has the check-in and security screening area. Dining options, departure gates, and retail stores are on the main concourse level, and the Horizons T7 Lounge is located on Level 4, above the main concourse.

Navigating the terminal is quick and simple. You can locate the main security checkpoint behind the check-in counters, leading to the gate concourse. Because of the terminal’s compact footprint, the walk time from the security checkpoint to any gate takes around 1 to 5 minutes. If you are connecting to another terminal, you can use the covered walkway on the arrivals level that links directly to the AirTrain station, offering easy access to other terminals, parking garages, and NYC rail networks.

A brief history of JFK Terminal 7

After it opened in 1970, Terminal 7 became famous as Concorde’s North American home for flights to London during the supersonic era. Over the next few decades, the building went through many multi-million dollar developments, adding more gates, upgrading security checkpoints, and adding top-notch lounges. United Airlines also operated some main transcontinental routes out of here for years, right along with international airlines.

British Airways left in late 2022. After 52 years at Terminal 7, the airline shifted to Terminal 8, clearing the way for JFK Millennium Partners to take over the terminal building for its final stretch.

Airlines at JFK Terminal 7

JFK Terminal 7

A mix of budget airlines, international carriers, and transatlantic operators operate from JFK Terminal 7. Air Canada, Aer Lingus, ANA (All Nippon Airways), Condor, and Kuwait Airways are among the key international carriers flying out from here. As Terminal 7 is scheduled for demolition eventually, most of these airlines will shift to the new Terminal 6, or another adjacent terminal, as construction moves forward.

Air traffic congestion, adverse weather conditions, and the ongoing construction work often cause flight delays at the airport. So, it is always best that you check the live JFK flight status before heading to the airport.

TSA wait times at JFK Terminal 7

Terminal 7 has some of JFK’s lightest security traffic. TSA wait times in this terminal are typically around 1 to 3 minutes for standard security lines. Most gates are a 1- to 5-minute walk from the security checkpoint, which makes getting around noticeably quicker than at bigger terminals like JFK Terminal 4 or JFK Terminal 1.

However, always plan to arrive at the terminal two hours before the scheduled departure time for domestic flights and three hours before the departure time for international flights. No matter how big or small the terminal is, the time requirements remain the same.

You can locate TSA PreCheck at the main security checkpoint for eligible travelers. As CLEAR isn’t available at Terminal 7, you will have to use the standard or PreCheck line if you depend on biometric screening. Checking the live JFK TSA wait times before you drive to the airport can save you from an unexpected delay during peak travel periods.

JFK Terminal 7 parking

Terminal 7 Orange Garage used to offer onsite parking for Terminal 7. However, the garage is currently closed. So, you can park at the Terminal 8 Red Garage. The parking rate starts at $4 for the first 30 minutes and goes up to a maximum of $74 a day. However, the garage has imposed height restrictions on vehicles.

For long-term parking at JFK, you can park your car in the Long-Term Parking and Federal Circle Station lots. However, these lots are located away from the terminals. Parking at these lots costs $55 a day. If you are looking for the cheapest JFK Airport parking rates, it is best to reserve parking at an offsite lot nearby. You can save up to 60% on the parking rates when you reserve at an offsite lot near JFK.

Lounges at JFK Terminal 7

Terminal 7 has fewer lounges than JFK’s bigger terminals. You will find dedicated airline lounges and pay-per-visit options on the terminal’s upper levels, above the main gate concourse.

Food and shopping at JFK Terminal 7

The terminal has a standard food court and some shopping options past security, which is about what you’d expect from a small, single-concourse international terminal. It’s noticeably less than the dining options at JFK Terminal 4 or JFK Terminal 8, but that’s because Terminal 7 itself is a smaller building. Rideshare and taxi pickup at JFK Terminal 7

The rideshare pickup area of Terminal 7 has been relocated to the Howard Beach Ride App & Car Services Lot, rather than the terminal curb. You can reach the lot via a free AirTrain ride. Taxis continue to pick up passengers at the curbside on the arrivals level. Also, some bus and shuttle pickups have been relocated to Terminal 7’s departures level because of height restrictions in the construction zone.

Getting to other terminals from JFK Terminal 7

You can use the free AirTrain to connect to all JFK Airport terminals, as there’s no airside connection to any other terminal from here. That will change once the new Terminal 6 opens next to Terminal 7 and takes over its operations.
