RDU Airport has two terminals. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are on opposite sides of the RDU Airport.
Terminal 1 comprises a single-level concourse, with gates labeled A1-9 and a four-lane security screening area on the second floor. Southwest Airlines operates exclusively out of Terminal 1, a small terminal, for all domestic flights. Transportation services, including ticketing and baggage claim, are located on the lower level, while the security checkpoint and departure concourse are on the terminal's upper level.
Passengers can enter the parking garage and Terminal 2 via a tunnel from the ground floor. Nine gates are designated A1 through A9, and a few dining and shopping options are on the upper-level concourse.
Terminal 2 consists of one concourse with gates labeled C1-25 and D1-20. Baggage claims and access to the terminal's ground transportation options are located on the bottom level of Terminal 2. Next to the departure concourses, there are the ticketing counters and the security checkpoint on the upper level. The Terminal 2 baggage claim level has outside access to all modes of transportation.
Upper-level passengers can choose between two different concourses. The 19 gates of Concourse C, which can be found to the right of the security checkpoint, are labeled C1, C3, C7 through C12, C14 through C18, and C20 through C25.
To the left is Concourse D, with 17 gates labeled D1, D3, D5, D6, and D8-D20. Outside gate D3, you'll find a variety of retail outlets and dining options.
Passengers may easily travel between the terminals using the connecting walkway through the terminal garage. Walking from Terminal 1 across John Brantley Boulevard or from Terminal 2 through an underground tunnel to the parking garage is an option for passengers. Depending on your terminal, the walk could take anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes.
There is no airside link between the two terminals, so passengers must use a shuttle bus or the moving walkway.
There is a free shuttle service that operates between the two terminals and to the low-cost parking garages. Take the Lot 3 bus to connect Terminal 1 with Terminal 2 and the Lot 4 bus to connect Terminal 2 with Terminal 1.
The Airport has EV Parking spots. There are private charging stations nearby the Airport.
All airport-owned parking lots include accessible parking for passengers with disabilities. The Airport's parking lots have 310 accessible parking spots in prime locations near terminals, entrances, and shuttle stops. In addition, wheelchair access is available on all shuttles running between parking lots.
RDU has two pet relief areas. Pet relief areas are located on Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 baggage claim levels.
TSA PreCheck lanes are available at both airport security checkpoints. The TSA website is the best place to check the hours of operation. Passengers arriving on international flights can use the Global Entry kiosks at RDU to clear customs quickly.
In low-traffic times, it takes about roughly 30 minutes to clear security. During rush hours, that time could double. It is recommended that passengers arrive at RDU at least two hours before the flight for domestic flights. Federal Transportation Security Administration agents oversee the Airport's checkpoints at RDU. At each security checkpoint, only ticketed passengers will be allowed. The terminals and boarding gates can be reached from any security checkpoint.
The closest Global Entry Enrollment Center is at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT). Near baggage carousel 5 at RDU is a TSA Enrollment Center.
You can get to RDU Airport by bus, train, shuttle taxi, rideshare, or driving down.
The GoTriangle Route 100 bus service connects RDU with the Regional Transit Center, which is located west of the Airport. The Buses depart from Terminal 1 between zones 2 and 3 and between zones 6 and 7 at Terminal 2.
No direct train services operate from RDU, but passengers can connect to services at Raleigh. You can also use Durham.
Hotel Shuttles: Shuttles to and from the Airport are offered by several of the area's hotels in the Research Triangle. The red areas outside the terminals indicate the shuttle stops.
Shared and Private Shuttles: The shuttles depart from the brown area outside the baggage claim.
Both terminals have taxi stands outside. This is outside of the Baggage Claim at Terminal 1 and the Lower Level outside the North End of Terminal 2 for taxis.
Ridesharing services like Uber, Lyft, and Wingz are used to pick up and drop off passengers at the RDU Airport. Zone 1(Terminal 1) and Zone 8 (Terminal 2) are designated pick-up zones for prearranged services.
At Terminal 1, there are curbside drop-off areas, and at Terminal 2, they are on the upper (departures) level.
Get on I-40 West via Wade Avenue. You can reach the terminals at RDU Airport by taking exit 284 for Airport Boulevard and turning right onto Airport Boulevard. You can access the terminals from Airport Boulevard.
Get on NC-147 South. Make use of the left 2 lanes to take exit 5A. Use exit 5A to merge onto I-40 East towards Raleigh/ RDU Airport. Use exit 283 to get onto I-540 E towards US-70. Use exit 2 to reach Aviation Parkway and merge onto Aviation Parkway to access terminals.
