Car insurance for women – Introduction

Most states require car owners to have at least the state-mandated minimum amount of car insurance. Like all other drivers, women who own or drive a car often are required to have a policy that meets the state's minimum requirements, if that's the case. Women pay about 0.68% more, or $4.50 more per six-month policy, for car insurance than men do.

Most places in the United States use gender as a rating factor when figuring out how much you pay for car insurance. But insurance companies are not allowed to use gender as a rating factor in seven states: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.

Finding affordable car insurance as a woman

Rates vary based on where you live, if you pay your bills on time, and a number of other things. Here's what you can do to find cheap car insurance for women.

Compare quotes

The most important thing you can do to find cheap and affordable car insurance for women is to research around. Nobody will get the best deal from the same company. It's a good idea to get auto insurance quotes from both big and small companies.

Know that gender isn't a big deal

Finding the cheapest insurance company overall can lower your rates by a lot more than finding one with lower rates for women. In most states, things like your driving record and credit history can also have a bigger effect on your car insurance rates than your gender.

Ask about discounts

Most insurance companies offer discounts that could help you save money. If you use the discounts, you are eligible for, your premium could go down. There are different discounts for each company and state, but some of the most common ones are getting your home and auto insurance from the same company, taking part in a telematics program, and paying for your insurance in full.

Changing your coverage

If your car is worth less than $4,000, you don't need collision or comprehensive coverage. Most of the time, the premium you pay for this coverage isn't worth the payout you'd get if your car was totally destroyed. Use online tools to find out how much your car is worth. Consider raising your deductible if your car is worth more than $4,000. When you raise your deductible, your premium goes down.

Safe driving habits

If you drive safely, your car insurance costs will probably go down by a lot. Your insurance rates can go up a lot because of accidents, tickets, and DUI convictions. By keeping your driving record clean, you can avoid having to pay these extra fees.

Cheapest car insurance companies for women

Every woman's situation is different when it comes to car insurance, and every woman will want and need something different from her policy and company. There is no one company that is the best for all women. Getting quotes from a few different companies can help you find the right one for you.

Insurance company Average annual premium for full coverage Average annual premium for minimum coverage
USAA $1,186 $398
Erie $1,276 $453
Auto-Owners $1,368 $396
Travelers $1,397 $480

Car Insurance for women by age

If a woman has a clean driving record and is 25 years old, her car insurance rates should start to go down around that age. Car insurance companies think that teenagers and young drivers are more likely to get into an accident than adults, so they usually charge them more to insure them.

Age Average Annual Rate
17 $4,652
24 $2,164
32 $1,866
65 $1,388

What age does car insurance go down for females?

Car insurance rates for women go down a lot when they turn 21. They go from $1,154 to $908, a drop of about 27%, which is still less than what men pay at the same age. Between the ages of 16 and 26, women usually pay less than men for car insurance because they drive more carefully and are less likely to speed or get into accidents.

Car insurance for women still goes down at a steady rate from 21 to 64, but from 26 to 40, car insurance rates for men go down faster than for women. This is mostly because of outside factors that show women are more likely to drive with kids in the car, which makes them more likely to get distracted than men who don't have kids in the car.

Why is gender used to determine car insurance premiums?

Car insurance is based on many things, but gender is one of the most controversial. Some states don't let insurance companies take gender into account when deciding how much to charge for car insurance, but the vast majority of the U.S. does.

Gender is often one of the things insurers look at when figuring out how much to charge for car insurance. Women sometimes pay less than men because they tend to have fewer accidents overall, as well as fewer driving under the influence (DUI) accidents and fewer serious accidents.

The difference between what men and women pay in premiums depends on the insurer and their age. Women between the ages of 16 and 24 pay about $500 less per year than men for car insurance. Insurance companies usually charge women 55 and older less than men.

Do men or women pay more for car insurance?

Insurance companies don't tell people directly why some people pay more than others for car insurance. But in general, insurance companies charge more for people who are statistically more likely to get into an accident or make a claim on their policy.

In other words, insurance companies have found that boys and young men are more likely than other people to get into car accidents, even more likely than young women. Young men might be more likely to buy a sports car, drive fast, or take chances while driving.

Most of the time, car insurance costs about the same for men and women. We only found a small difference between how much insurance costs for men and women who drive as adults. Overall, men pay a little more for car insurance than women, but the difference is only about 1%. Teenagers and young adults notice the difference the most.

Why is car insurance cheaper for women than for men?

It might seem unfair to charge one gender more for car insurance, but this is based on statistics. Women are less likely than men to get into accidents, be charged with DUI, drive expensive cars, or get tickets.

Insurance companies have found a statistical link between a driver's gender and the cost and number of car insurance claims. This means that women's car insurance is usually less expensive than men.

Men just drive more than women do, on average. This makes it more likely that they will be in an accident, which makes their car insurance go up. Also, men are more likely to speed and drive while drunk, which are both dangerous things to do while driving.

This is especially true for young male drivers, who are twice as likely to die while driving as young female drivers. Because of these and other things, young women are in fewer car accidents than young men, and because of this, they pay less for car insurance.

Auto insurance discounts for women

Car insurance companies don't offer any special discounts for women alone, but these discounts can cut the car insurance bills in all the usual ways.

This discount is for people who have two different kinds of insurance policies with the same insurance company. Most people have home/auto or renters/auto insurance. Most of the time, the discounts affect both of your policies. Here are some of the most common discounts you can get.

Multi-car discount

Like a multi-policy discount, a multi-car discount is given to people who have more than one car insured by the same company. Most of the time, the discount is added automatically either when the policy starts (if there are already two cars on it) or when the second car is added.

Equipment Discount

Most insurance companies will give you a discount if your car comes with anti-theft devices or if you have services like LoJack. The discount is usually smaller than a discount for having more than one policy or for being a safe driver, but it can still help you pay your premiums.

Safety/Anti-Theft Device Average Annual Premium Discount
Passive Disabling Device $1,322 $10
Tracking Device $1,316 $9
Audible Alarm $1,319 $6
Electronic Stability Control $1,322 $5

Defensive Driver Discount

To get this discount, you have to take a real defensive driving course and then show proof (sometimes a receipt or transcript) of it to your insurance company. This discount makes sense because if you are a safe driver, you are less likely to need to file a claim. Make sure, though, that your company will accept this discount before you take the course.

Military Discount

Discounts for people in the military and their families are offered by a lot of businesses. The amount and requirements vary from company to company, so check with yours to see if this discount is available.

Preferred Payment Discount

This discount usually has different levels depending on how you pay for your insurance. For example, if you pay your entire premium up front, you often get a discount, which is usually the highest preferred payment discount. Also, if you set up your bank account to pay automatically, you can often get a "EFT discount." This is a discount you should think about if you can pay up front or set up automatic payments. Below, you can see how much these discounts are worth.

Good Driver Discount

You can get this discount if you have never been in an accident or been pulled over. This is usually a discount with a higher value, and it is often added to your policy automatically when your Motor Vehicle Report is pulled at the start of your policy.

Still, if you know you have a good driving record but aren't getting a discount, talk to your insurance company and ask if they have a good driver discount. In addition to this discount, you could save money because a claim or citation won't cause your premium to go up. This is the average effect an accident can have on your insurance premium.

Accident/Violation 6 Month Premium Increase
Speeding 11 - 15 MPH Over Limit $152
Speeding 16 - 20 MPH Over Limit $136
Speeding 21 - 25 MPH Over Limit $172
At-Fault Accident $314
Reckless Driving $503
Racing $544
DUI $548

Profession Discount

There are many names for this discount, but the idea is the same. Based on what you do for a living, some insurance companies will give you a discount. Statistics show that teachers, doctors, and police officers are less likely to file a claim than people in other jobs.

Because of this, some insurance companies will give you the money you saved. Most of the time, they will ask you to show proof of your profession. A photocopy of your degree is a common type of proof.

Good Student Discount

Talk to your insurance company about a good student discount if you or your children have good grades, usually above a 3.0 GPA. Most of the time, they'll ask for proof every policy period (6-12 months).
